Summary of NewsNation Ozempic Video
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently investigating the increased risk of suicidal ideation among users of Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic and Wegovy, two drugs that have recently gained popularity for weight loss.
The EMA's actions come in response to concerns raised by the Icelandic Medicines Agency, which reported two instances of suicidal thoughts in individuals who used Ozempic and Saxenda.
Another patient using Saxenda, a less potent weight loss drug from Novo, reported thoughts of self-injury.
Ozempic, used for treating diabetes, and Wegovy, an FDA-approved weight-loss drug, have been in high demand, especially after their positive effects on weight loss became popular on social media platforms like TikTok.
However, with the surge in popularity, supply shortages have surfaced, and Novo Nordisk has taken legal action against companies allegedly manufacturing counterfeit versions of these drugs.
Brio-Medical, AZ stressed the importance of combining the use of drugs like Ozempic with "lifestyle interventions."
Brio-Medical commented on the following:
“This drug is coming in and basically compounding the problem. Yes, it can help sugar control, but the actual approval of this was with lifestyle interventions, but only if the Metformin failed. So the issue is it’s been used out of proper context.”
He argued that although Ozempic can assist with sugar control, it was initially approved for use alongside lifestyle changes, only if first-line treatment with Metformin failed.
Goodyear stressed that the problem lies in the drug being used outside its intended context, thus possibly exacerbating existing issues.
Novo Nordisk, in response to these investigations and reports, has stated that patient safety remains their top priority, and they are taking all reports of adverse events very seriously.
The pharmaceutical company's own safety monitoring has so far found no causal association between the reported self-harming thoughts and the use of these drugs.
While the labels for both Ozempic and Wegovy in Europe do not list suicidal thoughts as a potential side effect, the prescribing information for Wegovy in the United States recommends monitoring patients for such thoughts.
In parallel to these investigations, research, and testing of pill versions of Ozempic and Wegovy, currently administered via injection, are also in progress.
