Mechanisms of Action of Ozone Therapy

The beneficial effects of ozone therapy in cancer pain management may be attributed to its ability to modulate oxidative stress, inflammation, and ischemia/hypoxia, which are the principal mechanisms involved in toxicity secondary to cancer treatments. Ozone therapy induces a controlled oxidative stress that triggers an adaptive antioxidant and anti-inflammatory response in tissues at the local and systemic levels.

Oxidative stress, resulting from an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body’s antioxidant defense system, plays a crucial role in cancer development and progression. Ozone therapy can help restore this balance by increasing the production of endogenous antioxidants, such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, while simultaneously reducing ROS levels.

Inflammation is a key factor in cancer-related pain and treatment toxicity. Ozone therapy has anti-inflammatory properties and can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, including cytokines and chemokines. This helps reduce pain and inflammation associated with cancer and its treatment.

Ischemia/hypoxia, characterized by a lack of oxygen supply to tissues, is another common feature of cancer and its treatment. Ozone therapy has been shown to improve tissue oxygenation by enhancing oxygen delivery and utilization. It improves blood flow and circulation, thereby reducing ischemic/hypoxic conditions in cancer-affected areas.

Summary:

  • Ozone therapy modulates oxidative stress, reducing the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species.
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties, alleviating pain and inflammation associated with cancer.
  • Ozone therapy improves tissue oxygenation, counteracting ischemic/hypoxic conditions.

Ozone Therapy as Adjuvant Therapy in Cancer Pain Management

Ozone therapy has shown promising results as an adjuvant therapy for managing chronic pelvic pain in individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
